The Almonry Barn

Tewkesbury Abbey Precinct

Is a grade 2 listed building built around 1632 of stone brick and timber frame with a tile roof.

We converted the barn into a residential building reusing hand-made clay tiles to the roof.

Lime mortar and lime products were used to the internal and externals of the building.

Lead dormer windows and lead soil pipes were made and repairs to the Queen post roof were carried out in keeping with the original building.

The project was overseen by architects Astam Design of Gloucester

New bells, screen, kitchen and toilet

We were the contractor for this project which involved erecting scaffolding to the tower to remove and repair the stone louvers and also to allow the pumping of concrete to form the new ring beam to strengthen the tower and take the new ring of 6 bells.

The bells were originally rung from the ground floor but a new ringer's floor has been constructed accessed by a new doorway constructed in the spiral stone turret stairs.

A glass balustrade to the stage means the ringers are more visible and therefore connected to the congregation. At the base of the tower a new screen was constructed which provides privacy to the robing area.

A new water supply, was brought from the front gates of Horton Court has enabled the building of kitchen and toilet being connected onto a trench arch waste disposal system.

The project was overseen by architects Bartosch & Stokes of Cheltenham
